Heavy rain forecast in Punjab, urban flooding alert issued

LAHORE: The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned that torrential rains are expected to hit the province in the next few days, particularly on Muharram 8 and 9 (July 15 and 16).

According to a private news channel, the PDMA has urged the management of mourning processions to take preventive measures in light of the weather forecast.

PDMA spokesperson said heavy downpours are expected to lash the province tonight and continue through Muharram 8 and 9. The spokesperson advised procession organizers to stay alert and ensure safety measures are in place.

Additionally, the PDMA has directed rescue departments to remain vigilant, particularly during the forecasted days of heavy rain. The public is advised to maintain a safe distance from electricity poles and wires, avoid holding majalis on unstable roofs, and stay away from river crossings, streams, and storm water drains.

Earlier, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)’s National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) anticipated rainfall in various parts of the country and warned of urban flooding,

The NEOC alert underscored, “If rainfall exceeds 50-100 mm, it may lead to urban/flash flooding in local nullahs and river tributaries. Likely exposed urban areas include Gujranwala, Lahore, Sialkot and Rawalpindi whereas Galliyat, Kashmir, Kohistan, Mansehra, and Murree are prone to landslide and flash flooding.”

The NDMA has advised PDMAs and local administration to closely monitor the situation and take appropriate measures to safeguard the population at risk.

It advised the public to take preparatory actions including maintaining household drainage systems to prevent water logging. Report any blocked drains or potential hazards to local authorities promptly.

People are advised to take caution while travelling to landslide-prone areas. Communities at risk are also advised to follow instructions from local authorities. The public is urged to download NDMA’s ‘Pak NDMA Disaster Alert’ mobile app for timely disaster alerts, guidelines, and precautionary measures.
