NDMA issues urban flooding alert, warns of flash floods

ISLAMABAD: National Disaster Management Authority has issued a forecast of moderate to heavy rainfall across various regions of the country till Tuesday, July 9, and warned or urban flooding and flash floods across various parts of the country.

The affected areas include northeastern parts of Punjab, Potohar regions, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, southern Sindh, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan.

The anticipated moderate to heavy rainfall may cause urban flooding and is likely to induce rapid rise in water level in streams in storm water drains, triggering flash flooding across the northern regions of Punjab, KP and AJK.

In a statement, NDMA said that additionally, this precipitation was expected to result in high discharge levels within the eastern rivers.

Sutlej River was expected to experience a low flood stage with approximately 50,000 cusecs of water while Kabul River was expected to reach a medium flood level with approximately 95,000 cusecs.

NDMA said that these conditions were expected between until July 9.  Extreme rainfall may also lead to additional releases from Indian reservoirs, including Salal, Bhakra, and Pong Dam, which could directly impact the Chenab and Sutlej rivers.

NDMA has urged all relevant authorities and the public to take necessary precautions to mitigate the potential impacts of flooding and landslides.

Emergency response teams have been alerted, and resources are being mobilized to ensure a swift response to any arising situations.

The public was also advised to remain vigilant and follow instructions from local authorities. Tourists are advised to avoid traveling to these areas during the forecast period.
