Lahore- City of Smog
The charming city of Pakistan has now been ranked number one in the list of cities with the worst air quality in the world. In the city, there are some areas which are worse than the other. Many factors play into why the city has such bad air quality.
One of the key factors that cause so much smog in Lahore are the factories especially the brick kilns, that leave tons of smoke in the air, the increasing private vehicles which release smoke in the city contribute to the air pollution. Farmers every year do stubble burning and adding to that is the burning of garbage in the city center rather than in a secluded area causes more smog in the city.
In the AQI ranking of world cities, Lahore (353) was followed by Delhi (277), Dhaka (230), Karachi (188) and Bishkek (176).
Continuous exposure to smog can cause many ailments such as eye infections, allergies and even lung cancer.
In order to improve the air pollution of the city, some strict measures need to be taken, instead of deforestation and stubble burning, more green belts needs to be made, more trees need to planted. Public transportation should be encouraged so that lesser cars are on the road which would mean less smoke emitted from them. Government needs to take strict action against those who burn garbage on the roads instead of disposing it properly.
