Nepra released a Power safety awareness campaign for ‘Distribution co’ and ‘Emergency’

Pakistan is going through a severe electricity crisis. As a result, numerous incidents happen in Pakistan due to substandard material that causes transformer explosions and electrocutions.

Therefore, to spread awareness and prevent further incidents and fatalities, these precautions are necessary for Distribution companies and the public in an emergency.

The mission of the campaign:

  • Protect the lives and well-being of consumers, employees, and contractors;
  • Minimize any impact on the environment;
  • Minimize damage to equipment and property;
  • Minimize interruptions to the power supply and economic losses in Pakistan

There are numerous precautions, a few of them for Distributor companies:

  1. Only trained, experienced, and authorized personnel shall perform operations and maintenance work to ensure safety and quality.
  2. Develop, implement, and maintain a procedure/ Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to address the integrity of the earthing system, interlocks, and protection system.
  3. Identify, install and maintain protective systems/ relays for abnormal conditions such as short-circuits, overloadings, and falling lines.
  4. Protective relays and protection schemes set points/ sizes should be sufficient for the current rating to immediately ‘blow’ the fuse or trip the circuit breaker within the specified time in case of fault or overcurrent.
  5. Install insulated conductors (aerial bundled cables/conductors) for new LT lines or when replacing spoiled bare conductors, especially in narrower/ congested areas with less clearance from houses/ buildings.

Emergency awareness precautions:

  1. Never touch or remove anything that comes in contact with power lines. Call Electricity Company for assistance.
  2. If the victim is in contact with an electrical line in case of an electrical accident, do not touch him directly. Switch off or unplug the electrical cable or remove the wire with a dry broom, plastic stick, or wooden piece
  3. If the victim’s clothing is on fire, extinguish it with a cloth or towel, or a fire blanket.
  4. After removing the victim, loosen his tight clothing and allow him to breathe in the fresh air.
  5. Keep a distance of 3 meters (10 feet) from the electric pole during rain.
